Van Tien Nguyen
Ph.D. researcher in Electrical Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio, developing structure-aware and resource-efficient methods for quantum, hybrid quantum–classical, and deep learning systems.
Current Appointment
I am a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering and a Graduate Research Assistant in the Machine Learning Optimization and Systems (MILOS) Lab at The University of Texas at San Antonio. I am advised by Prof. Panagiotis P. Markopoulos and am appointed to serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for EE 2423 Network Theory during the 2026–2027 academic year.
My role spans research, reproducible experimentation, technical communication, and support for shared laboratory computing workflows. A detailed account of my research agenda is available on the Research page, while publications, experience, awards, and service are consolidated in my academic CV.
Background
Before joining UT San Antonio, I earned a B.S. (Honors) in Computer Science from Vietnam National University HCMC–University of Information Technology, graduating with Excellence and ranking first in a class of 26 students.
I later worked as a Research Engineer at Viettel High Technology Industries Corporation, developing natural-language-processing systems for named-entity recognition, entity linking, summarization, and timeline generation, then packaging models for reproducible production deployment.
Research Practice
I care about comparisons with strong classical baselines, explicit resource assumptions, and results that can be reproduced beyond a single experiment. My main working tools include Python, PyTorch, Qiskit, PennyLane, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Docker, Git, and GPU-based research workflows.
Beyond the Lab
Outside research, I enjoy science fiction and detective stories, running, volleyball, and strength training.
